The Fe y Alegría 2024 International Congress, entitled “Challenges and Opportunities for Popular Education in the Current International Context,” will be held in Quito, Ecuador, on October 21 and 22. This event brings together educators, community leaders and education experts to reflect on the challenges facing Popular Education today.
Our goal is to deepen the pedagogies and educational practices that drive social transformation, generating concrete and mobilizing actions. Through this congress, we seek to strengthen educational projects that guarantee the right to learn, allowing more people to realize their dreams and contribute to the construction of a more just and equitable society.
Speakers
Our speakers are international experts in popular education, committed to social justice. They bring a wealth of experience in innovative and transformative practices that drive equity and inclusion. Their participation guarantees an enriching and multidimensional approach, fundamental to address current and future educational challenges from a global and community perspective.
Dr. Leda Anahí Guelman
Dr. Leda Anahí Guelman is a leading academic and activist in the field of popular education and critical pedagogies. With a focus on popular economy and decolonizing, depatriarchalizing and emancipatory pedagogies, her work focuses on the relationship between university and society. She is a professor of Pedagogy in Educational Sciences at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires (FFyL-UBA), where she also directs the Department of Educational Sciences.
In addition, Dr. Guelman teaches Educational Research Methodology at the National University of Southern Patagonia (UNPA-UACO) and participates in several graduate programs. She is a member of the Working Group “Popular Education and Critical Pedagogies” of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO). As director of UBACYT and UBANEX projects, and coordinator of the Training for Work area at CIDAC-Barracas, her work is committed to social transformation through education.
Sylvia Schmelkes
Sylvia Schmelkes is a renowned sociologist, researcher and writer, known for her influential work on intercultural education and her acclaimed book Towards a Better Quality of Our Schools..
A lo largo de su carrera, ha explorado buenas prácticas en programas de apoyo a indígenas en la educación superior, contribuyendo significativamente al avance de la educación inclusiva en América Latina.
With more than one hundred published academic texts and essays, Schmelkes has left an indelible mark on the field of education. She was director of the Research Institute for the Development of Education (INIDE) at the Universidad Iberoamericana from 2008 to 2013, and president of Mexico’s National Institute for the Evaluation of Education (INEE) between 2013 and 2017. She is currently a member of the Education Commission of the Conference of Jesuit Provincials of Latin America and the Caribbean (CPAL), where she continues her work to promote quality education and equity.
